Papersave Pickup Program
Why Participate in Papersave?
Fibre products make up over 40% of the total waste that goes into the landfill. Raven offers a collection service to help stem the amount being buried in the landfill.
Throwing paper and cardboard into the landfill is expensive. Beyond our local landfill and the accompanying tax dollars spent there, the overall environmental cost of paper is high. Pulp and paper production creates some of the most toxic biproduct that any industry can produce.
Pulp and paper mills use a great deal of energy and consume enormous amounts of fresh water. In addition, the burial in landfills of half the trees we cut down after a single use is a waste of a precious natural resource.
Raven Recycling has a commercial pickup service for "paper"; "corrugated cardboard"; and various other commodities that we group simply for lack of a snazzy title as "recyclables". Each commercial pickup service is technically controlled by a separate contract and with the exception of a few differences, the main service charges are exactly the same.
The Society will charge a flat fee of $5.00 per pick-up, plus $5.00 for each 5 minutes of service time. Additional service time will be charged in 5-minute increments. (for example: $10.00 will be charged for the first 5 minutes of service, and $5.00 will be charged for each additional 5 minutes of service.) As a client, you are invoiced every two months.
Why Sort the Commodities?
Any commodity collected is brought back to Raven Recycling Centre and baled into compact bales. These approximately thousand pound bales are then sold and shipped to various pulp mills, and plastic or metal processors. Each category of commodity can be worth a different dollar amount. White office paper for instance is worth the most and is the only category of paper to make money over the costs of collection, processing and shipping. Therefore it is important that the white paper is sorted very carefully to keep the quality high. Since Raven is a non-profit organization the money made from the white paper is used to pay for the recycling costs of the other paper categories. This is the same for plastics, and so we keep number 1 and 2 plastics seperate due to their increased value, which helps to fund the shipping of the other plastics (3-7).
Paper
We do offer bins for purchase. They have two wheels on the bottom for manoeuvrability and a lid in case the bin is kept outside. The bins can also be rented. They rent out for $1.00 per month for each bin, invoiced every two months with the rest of the service charges.
The business client is responsible for:
- Sort paper into appropriate bins for white paper and mixed waste paper.
- Provide a centralized paper collection station, preferably located near an outside entrance.
- Place shredded paper into clear plastic bags.
- Bundle and tie small amounts of cardboard.
- Do not allow garbage and other contaminants into the paper bins.
Following these guidelines assures the most efficient service and ultimately, less charges for time spent processing your load.
Corrugated Cardboard
Corrugated Cardboard is any cardboard that has the wavy layer between the two exterior sheets.
We do have a large cardboard bin that can be rented and placed outside on your property for large amounts of cardboard. We rent these bins out for $20.00 per invoice which equates to $10.00 every month. We are not able to keep a large amount of these on hand due to their size, so sometimes there may be a delay in receiving a bin if we are between manufacturing orders.
The business client is responsible for:
- Provide a convenient location to store the cardboard for collection.
- Keep the cardboard dry.
- Sort out boxboard, newspaper and other contaminants.
- Flatten the cardboard boxes.
- Do not allow food waste or garbage to mix with the cardboard.
Following these guidelines assures the most efficient service and ultimately, less charges for time spent processing your load.
Recyclables
This includes all refundable drink containers; as well as non-refundable plastics, tins, and glass. We request that they are sorted much the same way as listed in the previous sentence. We have a selection of very handy bins that are either joined, or stackable depending on your office needs. This helps the sorting process if it's sorted as the commodities are collected, but whatever satisfies these guidelines as well as works for you is ultimately the goal.
- All recyclable containers must be rinsed clean of food material, sorted and prepared as indicated in the attached pamphlet.
- Refundables do not need to be sorted.
- Place recyclable and refundable items into CLEAR bags.
- Provide a centralized collection station, preferably located near an outside entrance.
- Do not allow garbage, compost or other contaminants into the bins.
- Driver has the right to refuse pick-up of any contaminated bags or bags that are not CLEAR.
Following these guidelines assures the most efficient service and ultimately, less charges for time spent processing your load.
